In her memoir, Lies Jane Austen Told Me, Julie Rowse offers readers a glimpse of the tension that a single LDS woman tries to manage, as she chooses to continue living her faith despite being outside the norm of LDS culture. Relying on the works of Jane Austen, John Hughes, and Cameron Crowe, she draws parallels between the pantheon of romantic comedy writers and her own relationships.

While reading this book, I was pulled down memory lane. Although I'm slightly older than the author, many of the pop culture references in this memoir also impacted my view of the world, influenced my view of self and molded my belief system, perhaps more than religion. It's sobering to realize how impactful media can be on one's outlook - especially on children and teens. As I read Julie's journey - one that I don't think is complete - I wanted to reach out and give her a hug. She was the rock and confidant to so many, yet seemed to receive much less than she gave. There are many sides to every story, but I feel Julie told her story with as much clarity and integrity as is possible and if one could talk to the men in her life (with Jane Austen's character's names to protect their identities), I believe they would agree with her recollections.
Her book reminds me of Eat Pray Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia in some respects. I was struck by how both women could bravely tell their deeply personal stories knowing how judgmental the world can be. I thank both authors for sharing their stories and helping me realize that we all have insecurities, some unrealistic expectations, longings, and bouts of loneliness.

Lies Jane Austen Told Me Julie L Rowse 9780692512487 Books Reviews
I read this book in a matter of a few days and I really enjoyed it. It's incredibly insightful compared to the constant "true love, The One" talk thrown at young people. Very relatable!
Compelling story about the author's expectations from life, and how they sometimes come up short. This, however, is not some whiny tome. Rather, the author accepts and embraces her life. Moving, funny, devastating at times. Worth a read.
Warm, witty and most of all - loved the author's weaving her story between Austen/movies - most intriguing!! There were several lol moments for me. Was a different read from my usual bent, but it held my attention and am now passing my copy around to select friends. Would love to read another of her works - and soon!!
This is the first book that has ever made me laugh and weep out loud. Your experiences don't have to be at all similar to relate to and appreciate Rowse's story. The rawness and honesty of this story is truly inspiring. It feels like you are sitting down with Rowse and having the realest conversation of your life. Would definitely recommend!
I loved this read. It was witty, honest, real (true story) and gritty. Love her perspective and wisdom.
Entertaining and fun book to read! Author writes about her life growing up Mormon and her adventures and mis-adventures (remind you of someone, Jane Austin). You will feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster ride but it is so worth the ups and down. Quick, easy read that will make you not only feel but think. Great book to share with girlfriends or book club.
A beautifully raw and honest story. What courage Ms. Rowse has displayed to share such personal experiences, and in such an entertaining and emotional way that you have to read it in one sitting. A perfect amount of humor and wit to balance the heavier parts that make you wish the tissue box was within arm's reach.
