Another hit for Ms Meserve, a followup to her first novel, Good Sam. What more could a reader ask for - some crime, some romance and some mystery. As with Good Sam the book is an easy read with a steady pace and developed characters. Kate Bradley is a news reporter for a local television station, who mainly reports on the ugly side of life, murder, brutality and such, but gets sucked into the story about a bizarre burglary spree at million dollar plus mansions. Who are the victims? How does the public react? How does she really feel about these crimes from a personal and professional view? The author blends it all in a steady pace with developed characters. There is a crime spree in the Los Angeles area. Only this time the group being targeted are the estates of the 100 wealthiest Americans. They live in opulence that most people cannot even fathom while a mere four miles away sit slums and abject poverty. There seems to be a pattern to these blatant burglaries and that intrigues LA TV News Reporter Kate Bradley and drives her to want to solve this mystery. Meserve does a masterful job with excellent characterization, beautiful, detailed descriptions of the estates, tension among the characters, family love as well as family drama and a love story. This is a story of good vs. evil but told with a twist that will leave you thinking long after you finish the last word!
Perfectly Good Crime is the perfect modern day Robin Hood story!! Kate Bradley is a LA TV news reporter when several multi-millionaire's homes get robbed but without a clue to who is doing the crime. At the same time, a mysterious person dubbed as Robin Hood is giving back to the poor and paying for what they most desired in order for them to survive. With Kate trying to find out who is doing the crime and giving back to the poor, home life is unraveling with a new job offer in New York City, a boyfriend that doesn't want to leave California and her father is wanting her to back off the case and acting strangely about who is really robbing the rich. It all leads to a shocking confession to who is behind everything and two people that are meant for each other, will find a way to work everything out!
Stories like this one makes you think about what if some millionaire did something like this without thinking twice in real life and the greatness that they could do with all their money that some of them seem to blow it on fancy cars and petty items. I didn't realize this book was a follow up to another book but you wouldn't think that it was since it was so well written that everything just flowed together! I never read any of Dete Meserve's books until now but you can be sure that I will be reading more by her in the future!!

From the author of Good Sam comes another Kate Bradley mystery. Wealthy homes ae being targeted in a series of break-ins. In covering this story, investigative TV reporter Kate Bradley runs into opposition from the police as well as her own father. She learns about the lifestyles of the ultra-rich during her investigation. Those whose homes were targeted are not thrilled about the publicity and throw up walls to thwart her investigation. Then, odd things start happening. Free, filled backpacks are given out to the needy, scholarships are funded by an unknown benefactor. Could the two stories be intertwined?
This can be a stand-alone book. However, the reader is introduced to Kate's love interest, Fire Captain Eric Hayes, in the first book GOOD SAM. What happens to their relationship in this book? No spoilers here, although I will tell you they face a series of challenges.
I absolutely loved this book and found it rather unique, filling a category of it's own...thoughtful crime fiction, with side of romance, and a hearty helping of social justice all seamlessly mixed to create a riveting and heart-warming plot. The writing is really easy to follow and flows well. Usually when I begin a new book, it takes me a bit to get into the writing style of the author. This story flowed smoothly from page one and immediately swept me away. The story was not only intriguing, but incredibly thought-provoking and important, while still possessing a tenderhearted sweetness that moved me. The characters felt real, relatable, and likeable, while still being people I aspire to be on some level. I thoroughly enjoyed each moment of this story and was sad to see it come to an end, though the ending was fully satisfying. I hope Dete Meserve continues to write unique stories like this one.
Finding a good, clean mystery is rare. Finding one that focuses on good is even more rare. Dete Meserve has pulled off both. The story is well written, and uses no bad language or sex to do so-in my opinion, the mark of a truly talented writer.
The perfectly good crime is one that baffles the media, the general population, and the reader. I simply had to keep reading to discover not only who but why. All of those questions are answered in a believable and authentic way.
And then there is the romance. I'm not a fan of sappy love stories, but Dete wove in love interests that made me question right along with Kate, the protagonist. I found myself rooting for whatever was best for Kate, but never really sure what that was...since she hadn't even quite figured that out.
Overall, Perfectly Good Crime is in a genre of its own, since stories about crimes don't usually focus on the good. Romantic mystery with a brilliant twist.
