I travel to England about once a year, and started a couple of years ago to expand my bird photography interests while there. I looked at several guides on English birds while in London book stores, and found this one to be the best of those that I saw on the shelves. A helpful aspect to this guide is that there are photos of similar species on the same page as the species being described, with page numbers for the similar species. For someone generally unfamiliar with the bird species in a foreign country, this is especially useful to me because I can easily check similar species without having to hunt through the entire book to see if a different species might be what I saw.Although written for birding in England, the range maps cover all of Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. However, the occurence table for each species showing months when seen is only for the UK, so I don't know if there would be better guides for other European countries.
At the back of the book there are photos and descriptions of rare birds and tables for vagrants. It is interesting to see rare and vagrant birds listed that are commonly seen here in the U.S.
